Naga comes from a small group of producers focused on high-quality, single-variety lots, and its refined profile reflects both the precision of washed processing and the clarity of the region’s terroir. With notes of coffee blossom, mandarin, and jujube, this cup brings a fresh, elegant expression to the growing reputation of Laos’s specialty scene.

ORIGIN DEEP DIVE

Coffee was introduced to Laos in the early 20th century (around 1915) by French colonists, with early attempts in the north shifting quickly to the Bolaven Plateau in the south, thanks to its volcanic soil, high altitude, and cooler climate.

For years, production focused on quantity over quality—mostly Arabica, later joined by Robusta and even small amounts of Liberica—but it remained under the radar until recently.

These days, things are changing fast. A growing number of producers—especially on the Bolaven Plateau—are experimenting with natural and honey processing methods or new varietals. These produce noticeably cleaner, more complex cups with bright acidity and layered flavours.

Because of its rich volcanic soils and fairly good altitude (around 1,000–1,350 meters) in places like Paksong, most of Laos’ coffee—around 15,000 tons of Robusta and about 5,000 tons of Arabica annually—comes from this region, which also accounts for roughly 95% of national production.

Laos’ specialty coffee scene is still in its early days—but with such stunning terroir and a growing commitment to quality, the Bolaven Plateau is a region to watch.
