Sin Net Chaung is a village in the Ywangan region of Shan State with a long history (over 100 years!) of coffee growing behind it. This lot comes from 74 households in the area, led by head farmer U Pyae Phyo Maung, brought in by our friends over at Pink Headed Duck. The community has built a reputation in Myanmar's specialty scene for the kind of meticulous processing that's hard to teach without years of experience: drying beds are well-maintained, trees are healthy and pruned at the right times, and every step from cherry picking to hand sorting is done with incredible attention to detail.

Grown at 1,353 meters and processed as a dry natural over 15 to 20 days, this Catuai lot delivers notes of Sweet Plum, Black Tea, and Cashew, finishing with a honey-like sweetness and silkiness that lingers. We love it both on filter and espresso. The fruit character stays clean and expressive on filter, and the rich sweetness and delicate nature come through really well on espresso.

ORIGIN DEEP DIVE

Myanmar’s coffee story is fascinating and unexpected. While coffee was first introduced in the late 19th century during British colonial rule, it didn’t take off until much later. For decades, Myanmar’s Shan State was known more for poppy farming and opium production than for coffee. But in the early 2000s, efforts to combat opium cultivation sparked a shift. International development programs and the government encouraged farmers to transition to coffee as a sustainable alternative crop, and the high-altitude regions like Ywangan and Pyin Oo Lwin turned out to be perfect for Arabica production.

Initially, Myanmar’s coffee was grown for local consumption, but the specialty coffee movement put the country on the global map. Producers embraced natural and honey processing, resulting in coffees with vibrant acidity, fruity sweetness, and distinct flavour profiles that stand out on the world stage.

Today, Myanmar’s coffee industry is thriving, exporting over 83,000 bags (approximately 5,000 tons) of coffee annually. And based on how tasty these cups are, this is likely just the start.

What's exciting about this coffee

Sin Net Chaung has been growing coffee for over a hundred years, which is honestly kind of wild to think about. Till this day, it sounds like they are still going strong, and the cup reflects all of the passion, expertise, and attention to detail. We learned about how specialty coffee contributes to the community as well, where the extra income from specialty coffee goes toward practical things for families: school fees, household supplies, and more.

Getting coffee out of Myanmar is still genuinely difficult. We're hearing that there are multiple checkpoints, delays at the border, logistical headaches, and it's been this way since 2021. Pink Headed Duck are based in both the US and Myanmar, which tells you they're not just buying from afar, or sourcing from a spreadsheet. Their ground-level relationship is a huge part of why we're able to offer a coffee this good, and we're super grateful to have gotten our hands on this one.
