Our experience at Kerehaklu really made us realize how overlooked Indian coffee was. We knew Indian coffee could be good, but this was another level. It was a fresh perspective on a coffee origin that we barely get to try in North America.

We first tasted Pranoy Thipaiah's lots during our trip to Chikmagalur, India in February 2025, and his processing and fermentation made his coffees stand out.

Pranoy is younger and scrappier and comes at coffee with an open mind. He uses his biology background and applies it directly to his fermentation experiments. Turns out, the right microbial activity can make magic—and these experiments are producing cup profiles that people (us included) didn't think were possible with Indian coffee.

The cultured washed method gives this coffee a beautiful transparency; you can taste the quality of the plum, dark cherry and dried apricot without having "processing flavour" get in the way. There's a caramel sweetness in the finish that lingers, and a soft acidity that balanced the cup.

We're so happy we get the opportunity to showcase the coffee from Kerehaklu.

ORIGIN DEEP DIVE

Indian coffee has a rich history dating back to the 17th century (yes, even earlier than Brazil or Colombia). Legend has it that Baba Budan, a Sufi saint, smuggled seven coffee seeds in his beard from Yemen to India. He planted them in the Chikmagalur hills of Karnataka, where the region Baba Budangiri now bears his name.

For much of its history, India has been known for commercial-grade Robusta and Arabica production. Monsooned Malabar was one of India’s most distinctive offerings, celebrated for its unique process that imparted earthy, mellow characteristics (which got a lot of love during the second wave of coffee).

Today, the specialty coffee scene in India is taking off (on both the production and consumption sides). A growing number of producers are experimenting with varietals, innovative processing methods, and sustainable farming practices to push the industry forward. Their coffees are elevating the archetypal Indian flavour profile while also introducing lots that diverge from it showcasing the country’s (largely overlooked) versatility.

What's exciting about this coffee

Dustin and I (Suneal) visited Pranoy during our trip to India last year, and he was one of the clear standouts — a producer on the cutting edge of specialty coffee in India, doing it through processing and fermentation.

We also got the chance to sit down with Pranoy and ask him questions about coffee, his biology background, and what he's trying to do with fermentation — so expect a lot of content to be released on our Instagram about this (if it hasn't already). This is the kind of coffee that challenges everything you think you know about Indian coffee. It's not earthy, it's not muted, it's not a blend filler. It's vibrant, expressive, and absolutely worth paying attention to.
