This coffee comes from the Dung K’No Commune in Lam Dong, Central Highlands, in Vietnam, and was imported by Mercanta. The Duc Trong mill processes this lot, and the cherries come from 180 smallholder farmers. This one stood out because of the sweetness. It was so sugar-forward and reminded me a lot of salted caramel and raisins.

ORIGIN DEEP DIVE

Vietnamese coffee has a fascinating history that dates back to the mid-19th century, when French colonists brought coffee plants to the region. Initially introduced as part of France’s colonial ambitions, coffee quickly took root in Vietnam’s fertile soil and ideal growing conditions. Today, the country is the world’s second-largest coffee producer (right behind Brazil) and dominates global Robusta production.

For most of its history, Vietnam has been synonymous with high-yield Robusta coffee (used for the mass production of instant coffee). But beyond the bulk commodity trade, Vietnam was developing its own unique coffee culture and identity, with drinks like cà phê sữa đá (Vietnamese iced coffee with sweetened condensed milk) and egg coffee earning a cult following.

Today, producers are experimenting more and more with specialty Arabica in regions like Da Lat and Son La, and testing innovative processing methods for both Arabica and Robusta. These efforts are starting to reshape perceptions, showcasing Vietnam’s potential to produce high-quality coffee that goes beyond its traditional Robusta reputation. Why not Vietnam?

What's exciting about this coffee

This coffee comes from the Dung K’No Commune in Lam Dong, Central Highlands, in Vietnam, and was imported by Mercanta. The Duc Trong mill processes this lot, and the cherries come from 180 smallholder farmers. This one stood out because of the sweetness. It was so sugar-forward and reminded me a lot of salted caramel and raisins.

This coffee had a ton of berries and milk chocolate on the nose, along with big raspberry and berry jam notes that come through the cup as well. This cup has a touch of earthiness that brings it all together in a way to highlight the complexity in this coffee.

Brew Guide

This one is really great on espresso at a 1:2 ratio, 18g in, 45g out, in about 26-30 seconds. It brings out a lot of sweetness and complexity, showcasing the raisin sweetness and gentle fruitiness, balanced with some roasted pecans, salted caramel, and dark chocolate. If brewing using a filter method, I would do an AeroPress with this one at a lower temperature to bring out more of the sweet fruitiness and body of the coffee.

Really enjoying this coffee! It has a nice balance of sweetness and acidity, with a clean, smooth finish. Works great for both filter and espresso. Would definitely buy again. And extremely fast shipping!!

Enjoyable flavour.

This coffee has a nice odour and a slighty nutty clean taste. It’s not quite as rich tasting as some others but very enjoyable.
